Almost a year since I've uploaded a single project (last was Blind Twister in June 2011). That's finally time to release a huge one! Started in early September 2011, here is Grand Duc...

1. Story and Description

Twisty turns, sharp direction changes, numerous bits of airtime: this roughly sums up Grand Duc, a GCI-inspired wooden coaster.

A huge 9 month-project that started much earlier, when I was trying to find a layout that felt and rode GCI-ish. Four or five attempts later, I came with a layout that provided and mixed speed, sharp turns, airtime and twistiness: this was the birth of Grand Duc.

The inspiration from this ride came from various horizons, and I had to work hard to make a realistic and detailed support structure. I hope you'll appreciate all the work.

2. Stats & Facts

* Length: 979,15m
* Height: 30,50m
* Highest speed : 78km/h
* Highest >1 G-Force : 3.2G
* Highest <1 G-Force : -0.6G
* Duration (station -> end brakes) : 1min 40sec
* Duration (station -> station) : 2min 11sec
* Type : Twister woodie
* Trains : 2 12-car trains with 24 passengers each

LeFLO, you've done it again.

Tech: The forces, the support work, the realism... They were all spot-on. Like insanely good! I especially liked how you shaped the ride to almost, if not completely perfect, GCI style. The transitions were amazingly awesome, and the forces were perfect. The only criticism I have in this category is that the lats seemed a bit too low in some of the twists and turns. Like they were perfectly heartlined. But other than that, this thing is close to flawless.

Adre: This ride sure gave me a good deal of thrills! It never let up, the forces were great, the lats were exciting as well; they were high enough to be thrilling but low enough not to cause discomfort. This ride was awesome from beginning to end.

Orig: The ride was really original. It had the nearly perfect mix of park and ride interaction! I liked that.

Kudos to you LeFLO, you have made a ride that rivals even the most renowned NL rides of all time.

This is by far the best wooden coaster ive ever seen, it is very realistic in every way and is very original, i could not find any flaws whatsoever, it all seems perfect, it would be a very popular ride if it was in real life, I also really liked the scenery, this deserves to be the #1 ranked wooden coaster ever.

Technical:
While for the most part the trackwork was fine there were some awkward spots that were trying a little too hard to be in GCI style. One of them was the the entire section going past the beginning of the lift to the final turn. I also thought that the lift was lift was a little slow, not to mention the track coloring being a little too bright for my taste. The airtime in the first half of the layout was uncharacteristicly strong ejector which GCI doesn't use. There were also a few places where the g application rate was higher than the maximum accepted rate of 15 gs per second. The detail on the surroundings and supports was incredible, the only bad thing was the mislabeling of the front row queue as a single rider line. It tunnel and e-stop tests out fine.

Adrenaline:
Great ride that kept a great pace throughout. The only problem was that there was something that just seemed slightly unfulfilling about it, I think it may have been the lack of anything that would really set it out from the pack. It was full of airtime and fast directional changes as well as headchoppers, so a good solid ride in this respect.

Originality:
The lack of any high fan curves set the main part of the layout apart from the rest of the GCI pack. The first drop was a bit boring, it would have been better if it was something more along the lines of Wodan's or Apocalypse's drop. The buildings and queue were great but it would have been nice to see some tunnels on the ride since the queue goes into one.

I was somewhat disappointed by this ride because I am aware of your capabilities. Granted, it was an awesome coaster, but I was hoping for more in terms of track execution. The part that was significantly better about this over Grizzly was the originality and how it had multiple inspirations.

I'll start off by saying how much I hate the color and texture of the wood. It is way too bright and it looks like plastic. I know you are going for the Southern Yellow Pine look, but all you need to do is look at pictures of real GCIs and notice how much darker they are than this coaster. It just doesn't make it feel realistic. On top of that, the ledgers have a different color than the track and they kind of stick out.

The supports, of course, are very impressive. You obviously put a ton of effort into putting every little detail possible. I like how you added wiring all along the track. My only complaint is that the ledgers are a little too thick. If they were a little thinner, it would make the ride look a little bit better, but it really wasn’t that bad.

Obviously, the trackwork was very smooth. There were little twitches around the track, but with the effort you put into shaping it, I could see why it wasn’t perfect. The turn that went by the station area had a few pumps through it, too.

The worst part about this ride, though, was the shaping. Granted, it was great, but from what I saw last time on Grizzly, I was hoping for that level or better, but I felt that in terms of shaping, this was actually worse. The drop was actually interesting. It was incredibly steep, but it seemed to work very well, and it was cool how it actually had airtime. The preceding turn was good, but the -0.9 g was really excessive. I would make sure that it never went over -0.5 at all. All of the airtime really should be floater. The following turnaround was also interesting. At first I didn’t like it because it looked like something TGG would do, but from what I have seen from GCI lately I could see it working, and it was shaped pretty well. I’m glad that you adjusted the bank from what it was at first. The next hill I had some problems with. it was too gradual to be banking without slightly turning. What’s worse is it kind of pulls back the other way. With that combination, there was some wrong-way laterals which didn’t seem fitting at all. The following turnaround I can’t technically complain about, but I didn’t like how it didn’t flow in from the previous element. Otherwise, it was okay and somewhat original.

The next section of track was the best part of the ride along with the end. Up until the turn by the station, shaping was perfect and the flow was perfect. That was all up until the turn by the station which I mentioned had pumps. Part of the problem was also the way you shaped it. The turn came down well, but it kind of “landed” and turned into a flat turn. That seems like something CCI or Dinn would do, not GCI. It seems like you could have pulled it up and gone into a little airtime, or made it pull down more gradually. I thought the Thunderbird turn was good, but I thought the transition in the next turn was something GCI would do and there was another flat turn that followed which I didn’t like. The next transition was probably the worst part about this ride. When you make a banking transition, you really should be rotating around somewhere above the center of the track, but what made this transition awkward was that it rotated around the right rail. That really needs to be avoided. Other than that though, the rest of the ride was very well done.

The pacing wasn’t really an issue for this ride except for one section of the ride. I thought that you did a great job of shortening your vertical force transitions. It really made the ride kick up a notch and the pacing was strong. The problem was once you hit that very awkward transition, nothing was defined until the last 2 hills. I felt like the train almost glided through the layout and instead of everything being evident and intense, the pace was killed. The finish reminded me of El Toro’s finish. It was almost identical with exception of the Renegade transition, and I really liked it. There was also plenty of laterals, but some of the awkward places would make it pretty weak for me. Again, I was hoping for a little bit better.

I thought that your creativity on this coaster was great . I saw inspiration from El Toro, Kentucky Rumbler, Renegade, and Thunderbird/American Thunder. Along with that I saw plenty of unique elements in your two turnarounds. and a few other areas. Also, you had a great layout, and I could definitely see a similar layout being designed.

Overall, this was one of the top 30 coasters of all time in No Limits, but there were some issues that I wasn’t fond of. Still though, this was an absolutely outstanding coaster and very impressive. Great Job.

Edit: I was trying to mess with the numbers earlier to get what I want, but couldn't. Realize that this should be above a 9. The more accurate numbers are on NLE.

I'm not lying when I say that this was the best wooden coaster I have ever ridden in NL. Never have I seen a more realistic GCI. Everything, the drop, the turns, the airtime, those little banking twists and quick changes, was done wonderfully. The supports, I can tell you put an assload of work into them. They were beautiful and the coaster is just beautiful to look at and watch.

A freakin great ride... will receive many hits in my simulator I assure you!

T: Almost completely flawless, as far as trackwork goes. No specific complaints, really; just some overall things. Not even issues, per sé, just...things that struck me as imperfect. You also missed at least two ledger beams on one of the high turns ;)

A: This was really good. It wasn't perfect, though; I felt it could have been slightly shorter - it felt a bit long, especially on the end run. Fun, yes, but a bit on the drawn-out side.

O: It was a nice, twisty GCI, that's for sure. It's becoming harder and harder to rate originality for coasters these days, I think, so I basically just averaged the other two numbers and rounded up. It was awesome is every way, but it just felt...familiar...not always a bad thing, but that's what makes it hard to rate originality!

It was lovely. I enjoyed the attention to detail, things like the railings on the lift being imperfect (as they are on a real wooden structure).
