HERSHEY, Pa. -- A 10-year-old boy from Reamstown, Lancaster County, has landed a $100,000 college fund for his award-winning roller coaster design.

David Sechler, 10, beat more than 1,500 other contestants in the national contest, which was sponsored by the Hershey Company and Atari.

All contestants used Atari's Roller Coaster Tycoon software for their virtual creations. They were judged on creativity, practicality, excitement and even the puke factor.

"I wanted to make something different than other roller coasters," Sechler said.

Sechler called his design the Blue Kangaroo. It features multiple loops and a top speed of 56 mph. You can take a virtual ride on it by clicking the links in the sidebar above.

Hershey officials gave Sechler a $100,000 check Thursday.

"It's an outstanding design. I think this young man may one day be a future roller coaster designer," said Andy Jacobs of the Hershey Company.

Personaly, I think that's joke! The track absolutly sucked, even though the kid is 10, sure that may be harsh, but come on! There must of been a million tracks better than that. It wasn't realistic and the pace was truely awful, I refure to believe that that track was the best out of 1500 tracks. More importantly, the money should of gone to me, a $100,000 college fund would have done me nice

I agree, the track was not that great, to many lifts, and was boring and not fast.

Agreed, how can you say that ride won when it has absolutely no theming, a crap layout, and really no original ideas. If that guy does become a coaster engineer, he'll probably work for Togo.

The contest offered no theming options, that's how dumb it was in the first place, and made worse by crap judges and very vague criteria.

what. the. hell? if that was the best coaster out of 1500 he must have been up aginst some what, like 3 year olds? that was one of the lamest and most pathetic excuses for a contest winning coaster i have ever seen. if someone posted that on this site it would get laughed at, terribly. pacing was horrible, the first section with the lift thing was pointless, no creatvity into the layout. just a few drops, turns and boring and probably painful inversions. if this is one of the "future coaster designers", i might never ride a new coaster again.

I cannot believe that track won $100,000. If it were uploaded here, I bet it'd have a rating of 2/10. There was no theming and the ride sucked.
And if that kid won $100,000, most people here would be trillionaires. What the hell is wrong with those judges...

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!!! THAT won $100,000 for college?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! It was horribly unrealistic, far too many lift hills, grotesque pacing, unoriginal, it looks like something that took at MAXIMUM 15 minutes to make... this was a horrible design.

wouldn't that suck if hershey sent that desing to b&m or vekoma and said "build it! i can tell this is going to be the ultimate new coaster for 2008!"

i thought it sucked ass. major ass.

and holding a 100,000 dollar contest with RCT3? whose bright idea was that?

i kinda feel bad for the kid though, because now he has his hopes up and thinks he is really good, when he will probably never land a job, except for, as woodie man said, at togo. :)

lol a kid wins money for building a track in RCT, the easiest, most unreal thing there is to anything that has to do with coasters and computers.

I mean congrats to him, but it doesn't even look like he used his imagination with it or anything, it just looks like a buncha pieces thrown together on a plane.

Togo is an Oregon based roller coaster company, where they have made roller coasters all over the world. They may be world known, but not for the reason you think: most people agree that their rides are some of THE most painful rides ever. Manhattan Express is one of their rides, and I suggest you avoid riding that unless you really want to ride it. Yes, I too got confused when I first heard of Togo, I, too thought people were referring to that smalll African country.

Looking at how bad of a quality this ride was, I bet this kid's name was drawn out of a hat.

EWW! This coaster is definatly insane! It makes me want to vomit while pouring acid in my eyes just thinking about how much money he won! Honestly, I could poop out a better design than this! I'd prove it, but I'll be busy for the next few weeks, and then I'll get back into it. But ya, even though the kid is 10, the track is definatly a joke, like seriously...it doesn't even have any scenery! Scenery, in my oppinion, is about as vital as the design of the track. But I did read in this forum that it wasn't an option, and that just shows ow pathetic the judges were. I hope if it was offered, the kid would've themed it. UGH! It's so stupid! But anyways, this poor soul definatly gets a thumbs down from me.

Sunny.

[lol] Typical atari to choose the crappiest design out of the 1500 people. Atari probably looked at age and location of the submissions... So they don't have to travel far away to give some cash. Some Rct3 junkies in here from USA should have submitted something. with theming and everything on it. If those people wouldn't have won the cash then... Then you defenatly know it happends in the same way as a lottery. Pick one out of ..... without looking at the track.
Coastercount: 1410 (I've seen the world and it's horrid contraptions... @.@)
