And I thought I was the only one who smokes weed on this site. WTF is Saturnalia, Gouldy?
Saturnalia is a very old Roman festival, that is no longer celebrated en masse. Most of the festivities surrounding Saturnalia became what is now Christmas, as the Roman Empire came under Christian rule, they essentially replaced Saturnalia with their own Christian festival. The point being to stamp out other Pagan festivals and show Christian/Roman dominance. Saturn was the agricultural god in their belief system and this was meant to please Saturn, in return for a good yield of crop in the coming year.
"Saturnalia is a festival of light leading to the winter solstice, with the abundant presence of candles symbolizing the quest for knowledge and truth. The renewal of light and the coming of the new year was celebrated in the later Roman Empire at the Dies Natalis of Sol Invictus, the "Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun," on December 25" - Wikipedia.
It was a little bit of dig at the "Keep Christ in Christmas" crowd, who assume their festival is more important than anyone else's and that they have a monopoly on Winter Solstice celebrations. The winter solstice has been celebrated throughout history, by almost all cultures - not to mention the number of "gods" and "saviours" whose births have been celebrated on the 25th of December throughout Human history. Their self importance and arrogance is stunning, at a time of year when they're especially supposed to show "good will to all men", etc. My point was, as long as you're wishing others well, does it matter what you or they celebrate?
A heartfelt Happy Holidays and a damn good new year, to you all.
