For 2017 Glenwood Caverns will be opening the world's first underground drop tower. The drop tower itself will be built by Soaring Eagle and they are working with a St. Louis based company called Creative Visions for the theming and hologram inside the mineshaft. Here are some pictures of the mineshaft the ride will be using:

And here's what the ride building looks like currently:

The park is working hard to get this open by the end of July as they originally planned for July 4th, but obviously missed that. The ride also only has seatbelts similar to this other drop tower by Soaring Eagle:

Ohh cool, I really really really really hope they are going to have a loading platform at ground level. Just instant 160ft drop down into the ground would be so amazing.

The loading platform is at the top of the ride. From what I've heard there'll be a showroom and then the floor will drop and then the ride will drop.

Best use of a drop tower ever.
What are these for?

Then will the car unload underground or go back up to ground level first?

EDIT: taken from the parks website:

PROGRESS UPDATE / July 20, 2017:
The ride is installed and the building is just about ready. The theming story-line about how we are re-opening the mine and need to start interviewing for miners to work the Haunted Mine is getting it???s final touches. The huge gear that will be displayed in the large window at the top of the building is installed and running!

Get excited!

Yes the ride will rise back to the top to be unloaded. People think there'll be some projections on the way up.

Looks like one of the most interesting drop towers I've ever seen. It doesn't look that big on the pictures though. Is the height of the drop already made public?

The drop is only 120ft tall.

That's not really high... but it'll be pretty difficult to build a really high drop tower inside a cave.

^ And not being able to see when you'll reach the bottom will make it even scarier!

A 120 foot free fall drop is enough to be exciting. Those transportable free fall towers at state fairs have a nice punch and they're only like 80 or 90 feet tall. Plus, starting from the top and dropping into a mine will make it that much more awesome.

120 ft is a pretty good drop, detonator at Thorpe Park is around 115ft and packs quite a punch. This being in a cave will make it even scarier!
