Start off by making a hundred or so bad layouts then ask yourself why you dislike each one. Then build a hundred more until you finally find one you like.

Copy real life layouts and pass them off as your own.

Just don't employ stupid people and you're golden.

That's like finding a Waffle House with no white trash in it.

I find inspiration from real life generally, but I'm a realism fascist.

A good layout is something you'd enjoy riding if you had the chance.

I'm like CK, I look at things in real life and want to make my own version of them.

-Download one of the older contest templates that have those boundaries and strive to build by the rules
-Think about what elements and forces you personally enjoy and incorporate them
-Look in the shower drain and get inspiration from the clump of hair someone left behind

Don't focus on realism unless you really want to.

That said I get bored day by day and imagine what I would love to see in a roller coaster. What element patterns, what train movements. At my new job I take paperclips and bend them around when things are slow. Also if you see a hose layed out somewhere you can find some interesting patterns to try out.

My only suggestion is to do what you want and have fun. There is no need to do otherwise :)
